The harmonious strains of traditional Mexican and Latin American music will fill the air at the Centro Cultural González Gallo, Chapala’s elegant former railway station, on Wednesday, October 9, for the 22nd edition of the Encuentro de Arpas, Salterios y Más.

Dozens of performers from near and far will gather there for this unique festival, showcasing the sounds of folk harps, psalteries and various other acoustical string instruments. The event runs continuously from 1 p.m. until late evening, weather permitting.

The festival serves both as a sharing and learning experience for musicians and a delightful entertainment opportunity for music enthusiasts. Participants come together to strengthen friendships, refine their performance skills and enjoy laid-back camaraderie.

Admission is free, though voluntary donations and souvenir purchases are encouraged to support festival costs. Food and beverages will be available for purchase on site. Spectators are welcome to come and go throughout the musical marathon. Seating will be provided under large tents set up in front of the cultural center’s back steps. Visitors can also bring their own portable chairs, blankets, picnic gear, snacks and drinks to enjoy the performances from the sidelines.

This year’s lineup features groups and solo performers from Colombia, the United States and various Mexican states, including Veracruz, Guerrero, México, Puebla and Michoacán, as well as from metro Guadalajara and the Lake Chapala region.

The annual harp festival is supported by the local community, hospitality businesses and the municipal and state governments through their cultural departments. Program coordinator Javier Raygoza Munguía says the festival’s logistics are managed by members of the Orquesta Típica de Chapala, the popular lakeside ensemble of which he is the founding director.
