Twelve-year-old Ana Sofía Angulo Medeles has already proven her talent. She earned a gold medal in the Jalisco State Mathematics League and took home a bronze in the national-level competition.
Now, she’s been selected to represent Mexico in the Singapore International Mathematics Olympiad, taking place July 5–8—but the cost of the trip is far beyond her family’s means.
To help cover Ana’s travel and accommodation expenses, friends and local community leaders are working to raise 100,000 pesos. Fundraising efforts include a raffle with prizes such as round-trip airfare to Cancún, brunch at Ajijic’s Casa del Sol, and professional massages. A bank account has been opened for donations, and a GoFundMe page has also been launched.
“This would be my first international competition, and I’m just as excited about going as I am about learning more math,” said Ana, a sixth-grade student at Saúl Rodiles Piña Elementary School. She describes math as fun, easy, and enjoyable.
School principal Alelí Madrigal Sahagún said Ana is the first student from the school to qualify for an international event.
“I’m thrilled—not just because it’s a big achievement for our school, but because I get to see the joy and pride it brings to Ana,” said Madrigal.
