Jalisco Governor Pablo Lemus has sought to calm public concern after the U.S. State Department issued a travel alert this week warning of kidnappings in Puerto Vallarta.
The U.S. Consulate General in Guadalajara confirmed on its website that it has received “several reports of U.S. citizens being kidnapped by individuals they met on dating apps in the Puerto Vallarta and Nuevo Nayarit areas in recent months.”
According to the consulate, victims and their family members in the United States were in some cases extorted for large sums of money in exchange for the victims’ release. While the alert did not provide specific details about individual incidents, other reports suggest that multiple cases have occurred.
