Civic groups will fight to preserve city’s Monument to the Missing

Several Jalisco legislators have warned of the social impact of plans to intervene in Guadalajara’s Niños Héroes Glorieta, the major city landmark that seven years ago was transformed into the unofficial “Monument to the Missing” (Glorieta de las y los Desaparecidos de Jalisco).

pg3bDuring a recent debate, Representative Tonantzin Cárdenas stated that civic groups are concerned that a pending move will be carried out under the guise of an urban beautification project ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

According to representatives of search groups quoted in ZonaDocs.mx, a website known for its in-depth reporting on local issues, a document purportedly sent by an NGO called Alas de Libertad (Wings of Freedom) to Guadalajara city hall outlines a project designed to “recover the historical and civic identity of the monument,” which it claims is showing “physical and visual deterioration from improper use, graffiti, posters and spray paint.”
