The inauguration of a large-scale art installation by Austrian-born artist Mathias Gmachl will kick off the 2025 May Cultural Festival on Thursday, May 8.
Set in the expansive Plaza de Liberación, the steel sculpture “Écos: The Song of the Unknown” depicts a giant whale and features impressive light and sound effects. The artist’s goal is to encourage reflection on the impact humans have on nature.
Gmachl is an artist, designer, researcher, and musician, internationally recognized for his design and creation of pioneering experiences and environments that challenge conventional thinking about the future. As both an artist and activist, he uses imagination and storytelling to offer a visionary and sustainable approach to life on this planet.
Mathias’s work is included in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the V&A Museum in London, and Norman Foster’s private art collection in Geneva.
The installation will be on display until June 8 and is best appreciated after dark.
