Garage sale fundraiser
Alejandro Luis Perez Landero’s daughter Sarah and her friends are holding a garage sale to help fund her father’s 150,000 pesos surgery for stage two colon cancer.
The sale is Friday to Sunday, February 21-23, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Lopez Cotilla 254 in Chapala (between Guerrero and Cindo de Mayo). Find all kinds of stuff, from crafts, furniture, clothes, rugs, pillows, cushions, books and more.

Open Circle
Oaxaca resident Enaj Schlak will present “A Peek at Expat Activism from Oaxaca” at the next Open Circle meeting on Sunday, February 23, 10:30 a.m. at the Lake Chapala Society.
The southwestern state of Oaxaca is one of this hemisphere’s most diverse cultural and natural landscapes. It’s the wellspring for human settlement in the Americas and today one of Mexico’s poorest states. Local resident Schlak will share her experience as a volunteer working in urban and rural areas of Oaxaca, including a micro-financing program that’s changing lives for rural Mexican women.
Chapala Birders
Wednesday February 26, the Lake Chapala Birders will meet at 8:15 am at the entrance to Cristiania Park in Chapala. Expect to see an interesting selection of species in the park and on the shore of the lake. At about 10 a.m. the group will go to La Palapa de Don Juan restaurant on the malecon for breakfast and complete the bird list.
How to Get There: From Ajijic go to the traffic light at the main street of Chapala (Av. Madero), cross over and keep going straight for five blocks, turn left at the T intersection and park on the right, near the Park entrance.
DayBreak Dementia Support
Lakeside DayBreak Dementia Support offers guidance and assistance to those caring for loved ones with early-onset dementia or Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), led by local resident Elly Contreras, whose husband, Ramiro, has been living with dementia since 2015
Upcoming topics include: “We Adapt” on February 24; “People Around Us Change/Adapt Too” on March 3; “To Tell or Not to Tell” on March 10; and “Living Today and Tomorrow” on March 17.

Democrats Abroad
The Lake Chapala chapter of Democrats Abroad (DA) are hosting a couple of meetings in the next week.
Monday, February 24 DA will host a Coffee and Conversation gathering at Pranzo Bistro, Ajijic (Boulevard Ajijic 105). Join them to discuss what’s happening in the U.S. and locally.
DA’s annual general meeting will be held Monday, March 3, 4 p.m. at La Bodega Restaurant. Hear new 2025 strategies and meet the new 2025-2027 officers.
Dina Titus, the U.S. Representative of southern Nevada Congressional Distric 1 (including Las Vegas) since 2013, will be the guest speaker. She is the Americans Abroad Caucus Chair, a Hoºuse Foreign Affairs Committee member, has a Ph.D. in Political Science and was a professor of that at the Universty of Nevada Las Vegas and is author of “Bombs in the Backyard. They Lake Chapala Society is collecting toys for the children of our local fire department in celebration of Children’s Day. Drop off your donations at the main Lake Chapala Society campus from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays through April 28. Your generosity will bring smiles and joy to the children of our members of the fire department. Please donate unwrapped toys for kids of all ages.
Mardi Gras
American Legion Post 7 Auxiliary is holding a Mardi Gras shrimp boil and dance party, Friday, February 28. Cocktails are at 3 p.m. and dinner at 4 p.m.
Live music by Gargamel; party competition, complimentary masks and beads, surprise entertainment, raffles, games, tarot reading and more. Traditional Cajun style shrimp and sausage boil served with a Greek salad, bread pudding and a special Mardi Gras cocktail. Tickets, 450 pesos, available at the Legion bar.
Shriners Ribfest
Get your tickets now for the 18th annual Shriners Ribfest, on March 4 and 5, 1 to 5 p.m. at Villa Encantada, Hidalgo 312 in Chapala (near Parque La Milagrosa).
This charity event supports the Lake Chapala Shrine Club’s efforts to send needy children and their parents to the Mexico City Shrine Hospital for Burns, and it always sells out early. Enjoy live music by Blue Cadillac and indulge in Adelita’s famous ribs served at your table.
