Expats in the market for an electric vehicle who are fatigued by the political machinations of Tesla owner Elon Musk might want to explore a Chinese-Swedish alternative now available at a new Guadalajara showroom.
Opening this week on Avenida Americas, Zeekr is a premium electric vehicle (EV) brand launched in 2021 by Geely Holding Group, one of China’s largest privately-owned automotive conglomerates, which also owns Volvo and Lotus, among others.
At its inauguration, Zeekr showcased its two models available in Guadalajara: the Zeekr 001, a luxury hatchback, and the compact SUV Zeekr X.
Zeekr’s vehicles benefit from engineering and safety insights developed through Volvo, particularly in areas such as crash safety, battery management, and driving dynamics. Additionally, Polestar, a premium EV brand co-owned by Geely and Volvo, collaborates on research and development with Zeekr, further integrating Swedish technology into Zeekr’s design and engineering processes.
The Zeekr 001 boasts a battery range of 620 kilometers and can be charged from 10% to 80% in just 30 minutes. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds and has a top speed of 200 km/h. The more affordable Zeekr X is an SUV with a battery range of 440 kilometers. While it reaches 100 km/h in the same time, it has less horsepower—428 compared to the 001’s 536.
The Zeekr X Premium retails for 799,000 pesos, rising to 870,000 pesos for the Flagship model, while the Zeekr 001 Sport is priced at 988,000 pesos, and the Flagship variant costs 1,099,900 pesos.
The cheapest Tesla model, the Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive, is currently available in Mexico starting at 749,900 pesos (a price reduction from 813,000 pesos a few months ago). This model offers an estimated range of approximately 272 miles (437 kilometers) per charge.
Since launching its electric vehicles three years ago, Zeekr has sold around 300,000 cars worldwide.
