Arena Guadalajara to open May 17

A local Spanish-language newspaper reports that the long-awaited Arena Guadalajara will finally open its doors on Saturday, May 17, with a concert by Brazilian crooner Roberto Carlos.

Several previous opening dates for the 20,000-capacity venue have come and gone, with concerts—including one by U.S. pop star Katy Perry—having to be canceled.

In an interview with El Informador, a spokesperson for the venue’s operating company, Zignia Live, said the arena would be 95 percent complete by Saturday but ready to welcome patrons. He did not confirm whether the arena would be operating at full capacity or if it had been cleared by municipal safety inspectors.

Roberto Carlos, one of Latin America’s most enduring performers, is undertaking this tour of various Mexican cities at the age of 84. Known simply as “The King,” he has sold more than 150 million records over the course of his long career.
