The U.S. Coast Guard training ship Barque Eagle will be docked at the cruise ship terminal in Puerto Vallarta from May 9 to 12. During its visit, the public is invited to enjoy free guided tours on Saturday, May 10, and Sunday, May 11, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. both days.
At 90 meters (295 feet), the Barque Eagle is the largest sailing vessel under the U.S. flag and the only active square-rigged brig in government service. Built in 1936 at the Blohm & Voss shipyard in Hamburg, Germany, the ship was originally commissioned as the Horst Wessel by the German Navy. After World War II, it was delivered to the United States as part of war reparations.
Puerto Vallarta is the second port of call for the Eagle on its West Coast tour and marks the start of a 14-week training program for U.S. Coast Guard cadets. The vessel’s rich seafaring tradition reflects the origins of the U.S. Coast Guard and its legacy of service and commitment.
In addition to its educational role, the Eagle serves as a goodwill ambassador for the United States, strengthening relationships with allied nations through international port visits.
