Tequila Express train ride back on the rails

The Tequila Express train, which takes locals and visitors from Guadalajara through the stunning agave landscape, is set to resume service after a nine-year hiatus. The rides will begin again on September 14, operating on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

no. 2The relaunch of this popular attraction was made possible through an agreement between the Jalisco government, the Guadalajara Chamber of Commerce, the Ferromex rail company, and the Guadalajara Convention and Visitors Bureau, as explained by Jalisco Governor Enrique Alfaro this week.

To restart the project, Alfaro said that 80 million pesos were allocated from the Convention and Visitors Bureau trust fund, with an additional 200 million pesos coming from the private sector.

The Tequila Express tour began in 1997 under the administration of the Guadalajara Chamber of Commerce. However, the train service was suspended in 2015 and replaced by a bus tour.

According to some reports, part of the issue forcing the change was the introduction in 2012 of the Cuervo Express train, a luxury service operated privately by the famous tequila producer in partnership with Ferromex. While the Tequila Express stopped in Amatitán for a tour of the Casa Herradura distillery, the Cuervo Express continued to Tequila, offering a tour of the company’s renowned La Rojeña distillery, a lavish meal, and other attractions in the town.
