Mexico tackles measles surge with new vaccination campaign

Mexico’s Ministry of Health reported this Tuesday that the country has detected 43 “imported” cases of measles, as well as 288 cases of whooping cough so far this year.

Measles cases have been on the rise in Europe, Central Asia and the United States, partly driven by the ongoing anti-vaccine movement.

In the United States, measles cases have surged significantly in 2025, already surpassing the 285 cases recorded by the end of 2024, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Meanwhile, Europe and Central Asia saw more than 127,000 measles cases in 2024, a figure double that of 2023 and the highest incidence of the disease in the region in more than 25 years, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

Mexico’s Health Minister, David Kershenobich, confirmed that 39 of the cases detected in the border state of Chihuahua were “imported” from Texas. According to the Texas Department of State Health Services, 279 cases have been reported since late January, with 36 patients hospitalized. While most of the cases involve individuals who were unvaccinated or had an unknown vaccination status, two individuals reported having received at least one dose of the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine.
