Last Minute Halloween
Those who are still looking for the perfect opportunity to strut their stuff in dynamite Halloween costumes are reminded that the Tall Boys 2014 Halloween Bash featuring the Brass Balls Horn section will “return from the dead” and take the stage at El Barco on Friday, October 31, 8 p.m. Tickets are 70 pesos. In addition to the riotous good Tall Boys time, there will be prizes for the best costumes, a new band member to meet and much more.
Upcoming fiestas
To Halloween or not Halloween? The spooky day so many expats love to fear has gained popularity during the past two decades. There were plenty of purists (probably mostly expats) who adamantly fought the importation of Halloween. They were concerned that a day focused on ghosts, skeletons and treats might overshadow the overlapping old local traditions on October 31, and November 1 and 2.
History Club
The History Club of the Lake Chapala Society commences its 2014-15 season on Tuesday, October 21, 1 p.m. at the society. The group will view one of the “Cosmos” series of famed astronomer and science communicator Carl Sagan.
Voter Registration
While the Lake Chapala Society will be closed on Monday, October 13 for the observance of Canadian Thanksgiving, Democrats Abroad volunteers will be on hand from 10 a.m. until noon in the front patio so that U.S. citizens can register to vote.
Huichol pilgrimage
On September 23, a group of 36 Wixaritari (Huichols) made a pilgrimage to the Isla de los Alacranes on Lake Chapala to pay homage to Takutsi Nakawe, their ancestral grandmother, who, accompanied by her dog, is said to have landed on the island after the great floods. Legend has it that she was responsible for saving the corn and all the seeds in the New World.
Genealogy Forum
The next meeting of the Genealogy Forum will be at 2 p.m. on Monday, September 29 in the Lake Chapala Society Sala. Those attending will attempt to obtain additional information on pre-1850 ancestors in the United States via a webinar.
Red Cross Information Kit
As a result of the problems Cruz Roja EMTs experience when called to help an intensely ill patient, the organization has been promoting the use of their Emergency Medical Information Kits.
